The League gathers at Chelsea Clinton’s signing of her latest book, She Persisted Around the World, at Shiley Theater in San Diego.
On February 7, Just Like My Child Foundation held its latest League gathering at University of San Diego’s Shiley Theater. We were able to purchase a block of tickets for the sold out Chelsea Clinton book signing so nearly 50 of our League Leaders could share this extraordinary experience.
Immediately following the book signing, we had an exclusive League reception at the nearby Institute for Peace & Justice. (We couldn’t have asked for a more aptly named conference room for our gathering!).
Of course, we all know that Chelsea Clinton is the daughter of former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton—but, did you know she was a children’s book author? Or, that the inspiration for her latest book, And She Persisted: 13 Women Who Changed History, was the silencing of Elizabeth Warren when she attempted to read Coretta Scott King’s firsthand account of Jeff Session’s racist behavior during his confirmation hearing? Well, you would if you had been in attendance at this special event!
Chelsea’s book signing was part of Warwick Bookstore’s and University of San Diego’s College of Arts and Sciences spring author series. And She Persisted: 13 Women Who Changed History is the second book in a female-centered series that began with Chelsea’s No. 1 New York Times best-selling picture book, She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World. It celebrates 13 inspiring women from around the world, including Marie Curie, J.K, Rowling, and Malala Yousafzai, who have stood up and spoken out for what’s right despite the pressure to remain quiet.
Shortly after walking on stage, Chelsea shared that she is expecting her third child and began to read her inspiring new book. After closing the back cover, she treated us to a precious Q&A where she only took questions from inquisitive young girls in the audience. Hearts were warmed as Chelsea answered questions like “What was your favorite subject in school when you were younger?” and “What was the best advice your mom gave you?,” in a thoughtful and age appropriate way.
Here answer to the latter question was “to take serious criticism from serious people seriously” and “to take unserious criticism from unserious people unseriously.”
When asked what it was like growing up in the White House she answered—”My parents made it as normal as possible and also ensured that I was aware of how extraordinary it was.” She also touched upon being a target of bullying by both children and adults and emphasized how this contributed to her strength today.
When Chelsea went from the stage to a small table to personally sign a mind boggling number of books, our volunteers waited in line so our League participants could get to socializing. For the next 90 minutes, there was delicious conversation amongst our special network of inspiration women, as well as snacks and wine and an informative and motivating presentation by our founder, Vivian Glyck.
Vivian shared the stories of our most recent Mandela Scholars—14 girls who completed the rigorous selection process and will receive a full scholarship that will enable them to complete their secondary education as a result of generous sponsorships from several individuals (including some of our League sisters) and previewed the upcoming Mastermind Summit (March 30, 2019) and Uganda trip (tentatively scheduled for June 2019).
You want to know what the icing on this cake is? Reading things like THIS from our League Sister, Caroline, who brought her daughter to the Chelsea Clinton book signing gathering:
Had the best two days of mother daughter bonding and empowering time! Attended @chealseaclinton ‘s book signing event at USD followed by a #justlikemychild private league member meeting hosted by none other than beautiful sister @vivianglyck. This is one of few worthy organizations I contribute time and monies to help empower girls in Uganda. #barefoodangel for bringing balance into this world one women at a time. #weareallone #girlempowerment #philanthropy | Caroline, League Sister and Owner of BareFood Angel

The League is a network of extraordinary women leaders who support Just Like My Child Foundation’s (JLMC) mission to empower vulnerable adolescent girls through the Girl Power Project®. Our League Gatherings are a series of events designed to mobilize members into self care, connection, and community—and doing the next right thing.
Follow JLMC on Instagram @justlikemychild and Facebook @justlikemychildfoundation for to meet League members and get updates on the upcoming League Gatherings.
Since its founding by Vivian Glyck in 2006, Just Like My Child Foundation has developed deep partnerships with rural communities in Africa to deliver sustainable programs that address health care, education, microenterprise, social justice, and women/girls’ empowerment. Through that work, JLMC organically came to understand that focusing on vulnerable adolescent girls is a powerful approach to disrupting the cycle of poverty. Today, Just Like My Child Foundation is focused on its mission to empower vulnerable adolescent girls by enabling them to create healthy, self-sustaining families who prosper without further aid.
